We Practice What We Teach: Professional Development Designed Around the Science of Learning
Our Professional Development (PD) on the Science of Learning democratizes access to decades of research on human learning. It also incoporates the scientific principles of human learning to how deliver the course.
Learning through our PD is active, engaging, collaborative, and application-based. Our course will invigorate your lesson planning with science-based tools that will enable your students to master what you teach.
12 Modules | 12 Weeks | 24 Hours of PD
This course consists of ~24 hours of self-led asynchronous e-learning, which are complemented with live synchronous webinars and office hours to support learners. Learners are encouraged to maintain a pace of one module per week to be in sync with each other to promote meaningful peer discussion and collaboration and to benefit from scheduled office hours and webinars.
Cognition & Learning
The first module lays the foundation for the rest of our PD. Here, we define the core cognitive skills we rely upon for learning, including how these shape a student’s ability to learn and how you can inform your teaching.
Developing Self-Regulated Learners
Successful learners are self-regulated learners, which can be taught and developed in the classroom. In this module teachers learn the core tenets of a self-regulated learner: understanding key aspects of the functional architecture of human learning; effective strategies and techniques for learning; and how students can self-monitor and control their own learning.
Processing Skills (Attention, Working Memory & Processing Speed)
Learn about the role of processing skills, including what symptoms look like when a processing skill is weak, the statistics behind these skills in the classroom, and what you can do in your classroom to accommodate for processing skill strengths and weaknesses.
What is Executive Function and how does it affect learning? How common is comorbidity with other learning struggles such as ADHD, and processing skills?
Learn a framework for understanding the root causes and symptoms of Executive Dysfunction, including ideas and insights regarding what can and should be done to help learners.
Mastering Memory Part I (Encoding)
Despite the compelling research supporting the efficacy of techniques and strategies to enhance a student’s ability to amass knowledge, these are widely unknown by students. Instead, most students rely on ineffective strategies to learn information which leads to superficial learning at best.
Mastering Memory is comprehensive and divided into two parts. The first module focuses on mastering proven techniques to facilitate the encoding of information learned.
Mastering Memory Part II (Retrieval)
The second module focuses on mastering retrieval strategies, which are powerful tools for enhancing learning. These are even more effective when complemented with the encoding techniques we cover in the first part of Mastering Memory!
Learn to develop your students’ awareness of how their learning occurs, including an ability to monitor and manage their learning behaviors.
This is the foundation for learning independently, effectively and efficiently. This module will help you develop your student’s metacognition through practical strategies that gradually foster metacognitive awareness.
Formative Assessments, Effective Feedback & PBL
Research suggests effective feedback, formative assessments and peer-based learning are among the most effective ways a student can learn information.
In this module you will learn how to apply formative assessments, feedback and peer-based learning from an expert on the science of learning as well as the application of these concepts.
In the majority of classrooms, student engagement decreases with every year of schooling. Yet, student learning requires their engagement and motivation. What do you see as the biggest barrier(s) to motivation for students? What is currently in place in your classroom or at your institution as a whole to support learner engagement and motivation?
Learn what research reveals about the most effective ways for teachers to foster student motivation and engagement in the classroom.
Cognitive Diversity & Learning Differences
Learning is a cognitive process and every classroom is cognitively diverse. While labeling students hinders their performance, understanding their cognitive profile and how they learn, enables you to be a more effective teacher.
In this module, you will learn how to recognize common symptoms among students with specific learning difficulties, including processing disorders, twice exceptional (gifted students with learning disabilities).
More importantly, in this module you will learn how to map learning difficulties to cognitive skills as well as refine your approach to how you teach them through appropriate strategies to engage your students’ gifts and support their areas of difficulty.
Emotions & Learning
Learn how to foster positive emotions and behaviors that increase student engagement, effort and learning outcomes. Develop a better understanding of the interdependencies between cognition, emotion and behaviors to better understand your students root causes.
In this module we explore the role of negative and positive emotions in learning with tools to minimize those that hinder the process while maximizing those that enable successful learning.
Understanding What Works
Understand the research supporting what works to improve learning outcomes in the classroom. Identify best-practices for teaching and common policy mistakes meant to target teaching outcomes that are ineffective.
Learn what interventions and approaches have the highest impact in fostering student learning as well as how to differentiate between myths and scientific principles that underpin our understanding of learning. More importantly, learn to adjust your approach to teaching based on these insights.
