Online PD: Science of Learning

Online PD: Science of Learning

Partnering with leading cognitive scientists, subject matter experts, and academic institutions, COGx bridges the gap between research from the learning sciences and its application to the classroom. The Science of Learning for Educators online professional development program provides educators with compelling research and insightful application to bolster teaching efficacy and improve their students’ ability to learn. COGx partner schools obtain the following impact:

  • Schools experience meaningful increases in academic performance and reduced failure rates.
  • Educators teach with a deeper understanding of how their students learn, while applying proven strategies to enhance learning outcomes.
  • Students develop into more confident and independent lifelong learners.

Developing Sophisticated Learners

Distilling the science of learning in our comprehensive 12-module program, Developing Sophisticated Learners, educators learn how teach effectively while developing their students ability to learn independently. Sophisticated learners understand how they learn, have mastered evidence-based techniques and strategies to learn, and can monitor and control their own learning. Developing Sophisticated Learners is led by world-renowned learning scientists and expert facilitators who provide educators with guidance and feedback on the application of course content as they also collaborate with a community of their peers to share resources and insights. COGx teaches the science of learning through the synchronous and asynchronous components while demonstrating best practices through the learning experience. To discover more about the program elements, faculty, and enrollment for Developing Sophisticated Learners, please visit the course page.

Short Programs On The Science Of Learning

The option to enroll in four individual mini-courses, derived from the curriculum of the Developing Sophisticated Learners program, is also available. We strongly recommend that these short programs be taken in the order presented below as the material in each course builds on the previous one.

Mastering Memory

Educators learn how to teach for mastery with proven techniques to facilitate the encoding of learned information, as well as strategies for retrieval of that information, in this three-module program. Educators will discover how to embed the science of learning and memory into their lesson plans, thus improving the efficacy of their teaching and the academic performance of their students.

Processing, Executive Function & Cognitive Diversity

In this five-module program, educators will learn how to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of a student’s processing skills, the indicators of executive dysfunction and other learning difficulties, and how to adapt their teaching to effectively address these differences in a diverse classroom. Educators will also learn approaches for engaging students’ gifts and supporting their areas of difficulty.

Metacognition & Feedback

In this two-module program, educators will learn practical strategies for guiding their students in developing metacognitive awareness, as well as tools and guidance to apply effective feedback, formative assessments, and peer-based learning, from global experts on the science of learning.

Emotions & Engagement

Learning how to foster engagement and the science of intrinsic motivation in students and understand the role that negative and positive emotions play in learning are at the center of this two-module program for educators.
