Clone of Becoming A Sophisticated Learner

Clone of Becoming A Sophisticated Learner

In partnership with the world’s leading experts, COGx bridges the gap between research from learning sciences and  application. Our online program for students provides compelling research and insightful application to improve your ability to learn independently .

Ensuring Lifelong Learning Success

Becoming a Sophisticated Learner democratizes access to decades of research on human learning. Students demystify the learning process, define learning success, and feel empowered to take control of their education. Participants will learn how to monitor their learning and strategies to learn deeply. Learning through our student course is active, engaging, collaborative, and application-based. Our program will develop your ability to learn effectively and independently with science-based tools that will enable you to master what you are taught inside and outside the classroom.

Program Modules: Becoming A Sophisticated Learner

This program consists of 6 Modules of self-led asynchronous e-learning, which are complemented with live synchronous group collaboration, and guided practice to support students. The pace of the course is adjustable to the needs of each partner organization.

What Students Learn

Learning Success Defined

Scientists have spent decades deciphering how we learn optimally. The way we learn is different from how we think we learn and vastly different from how students study. These scientific discoveries should not be a secret or a mystery for students.

We begin this course by challenging paradigms about learning and identifying key elements involved in learning.

Module 01

Unlearning
Learning is something you will do for life, during and after your academic career. There is a proper way to learn efficiently and effectively. Learn about the common misconceptions of learning and some basic necessities for learning to occur.

Module 2

Relearning
Have you ever wondered how people truly master a topic? Learning is an emotional and cognitive process. Discover how to manage challenging emotions and become aware of your mindset related to learning. Uncover the habits of mind and routines to discover what is possible for you.

Learning Beyond Rote Memorization

We often sit in class to be taught and presume the educator is leading the learning. However, learning occurs when we are active drivers of the process.

The skills to be successful in school and beyond can be developed with intentional practice. Master techniques that you can apply during class and at home to make information stick in your memory.

Learn strategies to practice retrieval of information for durable memories that can transfer to other contexts.

Module 3

Mastering Memory I
Do you often re-read, highlight, underline and/or forget what you study? Have you ever crammed before a test? Studies show that the most commonly used strategies to study are the most ineffective ones for durable learning. Learn the basics of how memory works and strategies to facilitate acquiring and applying information.

Module 4

Mastering Memory II
Learn to study smarter and not harder! Compelling research reveals that certain encoding techniques and retrieval strategies improve learning dramatically. Continue to develop your ability to acquire knowledge using proven techniques that facilitate the encoding, storage and recall of new information.

Managing & Monitoring Learning Success

Have you ever stayed up late to cram for a test and did poorly anyway? Felt like you knew the material well until you took the test? Been lost as to how to start a project or get to the finish line?

You were likely using ineffective learning habits that are quite common. They might result in superficial learning or an ineffective use of your time. Fortunately, there is ample research by cognitive scientists that support the use of executive function and metacognitive skills involved with monitoring and managing your learning process

Module 5

Executive Function: Prepare for Learning
You are expected to pay attention in class, organize the materials and content, and ultimately use it in and out of the classroom. Yet, rarely are we taught to do this effectively or consciously. Learn about the monitoring and managing skills needed before learning activities occur.

Module 6

Metacognition: The Sophisticated Learner's Superpower
Learning does not stop once an activity is complete. In fact, the cyclical nature of improving on skills is critical to transferring knowledge to other contexts. Learn about the monitoring and managing skills needed after learning activities occur. Finish strong and set yourself up for success next time.
