Vincent was a 15-year-old twice exceptional male who had been diagnosed with Asperger’s. He ranked above the 99th percentile on all cognitive abilities to the exception of processing speed, which ranked on the 13th percentile.
Aproach
The approach for Vincent’s program was to start with targeting processing speed by incorporating a time component to areas in which showed strengths. For example, Vincent excelled in exercises involving creativity, visualization, and memory. Exercises were delivered by either modifying the time he had to memorize something, recall it, or both. The metronome was applied to gradually increase the rate at which a response was generated, or a timer was implemented to gradually decrease the time it took to complete a task.
Outcomes
A few weeks after beginning training, Vincent had already started to show improvement. Experiencing this became a great source of motivation for him. He stopped displaying anxiety when faced with a challenge, and instead worked extra hard to reach a goal. He realized that not being able to perform something at the time, didn’t mean that he would never be able to, but rather that he had to work hard and take steps in order to get there.
