Debunking Common Learning and Memory Myths
May 24th | June 14th | July 12th
This presentation will provide an overview of the Science of Learning and debunk common learning/memory myths with an eye on strategies that benefit all learners. It will be designed using learning theory from cognitive science to model application of research to instruction. Educators will leave curious about the Science of Learning with literature for continued exploration (a primer of 10 principles from the science of learning) and a strategy they can use immediately (retrieval grids). Educators will learn about neuroplasticity, metacognition, memory, and retrieval. Examples of classroom application will be provided throughout.
Presenters & Moderator
Natalie Young is the Learning & Development Director at COGx. She supports COGx Partner schools in adopting programs on the Science of Learning to ensure their fidelity and success. Natalie is an experienced educator who holds a master’s degree from Teachers College at Columbia University and has served over 350 diverse learners ages 3-13. Natalie authored curriculum that was recognized at regional conferences and on expert panels. In addition, Natalie has led and coordinated school- and state-wide professional development programming. After witnessing the power of the Science of Learning as a teacher and trainer, Natalie is devoted to making a difference for students globally by way of educators.
Saskia Giebl
Learning Researcher & Collaborator, UCLA Bjork Lab
Saskia is a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at Bjork Learning & Forgetting Lab, UCLA.
Saskia is interested in cognitive processes that enhance long-term learning. Specifically, she focuses on types of practice that promote effective activities and conditions for long-term learning to occur. In addition, Saskia is interested in understanding the nature and function of inhibitory processes of human memory – how inhibition helps shape what we remember and forget from the past and what we imagine in our future.
Susanna Brock
Director of Research and Development, COGx
Susanna Brock is the Director of Research and Development at COGx. She has been committed to translating findings in cognitive science into practical applications in the classroom for the last 15 years. She has worked as a mathematics teacher, science teacher, and learning specialist in middle and high schools in the New York City area. Susanna is also an adjunct professor and doctoral advisor at the Johns Hopkins School of Education. Susanna’s particular research interests include student self-efficacy and sense of belonging in mathematics, math anxiety, and the gender gap in math achievement.
Education:
Susanna earned her A.B. in History and Science from Harvard College with a certificate in Mind, Brain and Behavior studies, her M.S. in Neuroscience and Education from Teachers College Columbia University and her Ed.D. from Johns Hopkins School of Education
