Online Professional Development: Science of Learning for Educators

Partnering with leading cognitive scientists, subject matter experts, and academic institutions, COGx bridges the gap between research from the learning sciences and its application to the classroom. The Science of Learning for Educators online professional development program provides educators with compelling research and insightful application to bolster teaching efficacy and improve their students’ ability to learn. COGx partner schools obtain the following impact:

  • Schools experience meaningful increases in academic performance and reduced failure rates.
  • Educators teach with a deeper understanding of how their students learn, while applying proven strategies to enhance learning outcomes.
  • Students develop into more confident and independent lifelong learners.
Developing sophisticated learners

Distilling the science of learning in our comprehensive 12-module course, Developing Sophisticated Learners, educators learn how to develop their students into self-directed learners who understand the architecture of human learning and memory, have mastered evidence-based techniques and strategies to learn, and can monitor and control their own learning. Concepts taught in this course include mastering memory, the role of processing skills, the importance of formative assessments, student engagement, cognitive diversity and learning differences, and understanding what works.

Developing Sophisticated Learners is led by 12 world-renowned learning scientists and expert facilitators who provide educators with guidance and feedback on the application of course content as they also collaborate with a community of their peers to share resources and insights. COGx not only teaches the science of learning through the synchronous and asynchronous components in this extensive course but also demonstrates best practices through the learning experience.

SHORT COURSES ON THE SCIENCE OF LEARNING

The option to enroll in four individual mini-courses, derived from the curriculum of the Developing Sophisticated Learners course, is also available. We strongly recommend that these short courses be taken in the order presented below as the material in each course builds on the previous one.

Mastering memory

Educators learn how to develop sophisticated learners and master proven techniques to facilitate the encoding of learned information, as well as strategies for retrieval of that information, in this three-module course. Educators will discover how to embed the science of learning and memory into their lesson plans, thus improving the efficacy of their teaching and the academic performance of their students.

Testimonials From Teachers at COGx Partner Schools

Without the ability to remember definitions, facts, or details, students are stranded at the most basic level of understanding. The COGx methodology gives me the tools to train my students, to strengthen their memory through direct instruction of activities that build visualization, strengthen comprehension as ideas are linked through meaningful connections, and efficiently organize information that can be easily retrieved.

A wide range of information on brain function and how understanding brain function can aid teaching and learning. I appreciated having the video lesson as a follow up to the readings.

I really like how the course was set up. I also liked the questions from priming quizzes. The questions cause you to exercise your critical thinking skills. The topic was always great! I learned a lot about how I process information... it literally helped me personally as well as to become a better teacher!

I think the topics of this course should be given as teacher training for all teachers. This was the first time I had had any type of training on how to work with students who may have different roadblocks to attention, working memory and processing speed. This training helped me to understand my students much better
