Program for Students: Becoming a Sophisticated Learner™

Becoming a Sophisticated Learner provides the foundational skills necessary to develop 21st century skills. Students master evidence-based techniques and strategies to process information effectively and for building reliable prior knowledge, which is a prerequisite for critical thinking, creativity, and effective communication. Furthermore, students learn how to monitor, organize, self-regulate and adjust their learning (metacognition, executive function). Students are equipped to apply what they learn to their classes and studies and are as such prepared to succeed in school and beyond. The program is blended and led by a facilitator trained and supported by COGx. It is offered in various levels, from Middle School to College.

Program for Leaders

Our program, Distilling the Science of Learning, equips school leaders with the tools to align instruction with learning science. School leaders gain a high-level understanding of how students learn and a toolbox of methods to support faculty. The program consists of 4 self-led modules which can be completed in approximately 4 hours. School leaders are invited to attend a Mission Mapping workshop and up to 1 hour of personalized consulting. School leaders are prepared to advocate for the Science of Learning in their community.

Program for Students

Becoming a Sophisticated Learner

What Students Learn

  • Module 0: This introductory module sets students up for success in the rest of the program. At the college-level, this is inclusive of understanding how to form productive habits and extinguish unproductive habits.
  • Module 1: Students learn about the common misconceptions of learning and important, often unknown elements to learning success, including capitalizing on struggle and failure.
  • Module 2: Students develop the soft skills that complement academic success including emotional regulation, growth mindset, and deliberate practice.
  • Module 3: Students learn how to amass knowledge efficiently so what they learn is both durable and flexible and enables them to think critically and creatively.
  • Module 4: Students learn to study smarter and not harder with retrieval strategies.
  • Module 5: Students learn executive function and metacognitive skills that are critical to success in school.
  • Module 6: Applying what they’ve learned in the previous module, students hone their skill set to both monitor and control their own learning.

How Students Learn

The instructional design of the program adheres to the scientific principles of human learning. We incorporated methodologies that support mastery of content and transfer of skills. As such, the majority of the course is active learning. Each module presents an engaging learning experience through which students are learning-by-doing, through storytelling and collaboration. Students demonstrate their learning to authentic audiences of their peers and beyond.

Facilitator's Guide for Educators

The Facilitator Guide is a resource that helps teachers who are supporting their students. It contains logistics, language to use with students when introducing the program, how to check student progress, as well as optional lesson plans and activities. It is designed to answer frequently asked questions.
